Candel encara viu al mateix barri del Port on va arribar de petit. Ha vist desaparèixer els escenaris de les seves millors novel·les: les Cases Baratas, el Montjuïc barraquista…
“Ha canviat moltíssim tot no hi ha rastre de les platges i gairebé no queden vestigis de Can Tunis, però encara es poden recórrer llocs que estan gairebé igual, la Colònia Santiveri, el Camí de l’Esparver que porta al Fossar de la Pedrera...”.
Candel contempla el passat amb benevolència. Un passat combatiu, gens fàcil: va ser denunciat, censurat pel franquisme, i menyspreat per alguns crítics. Candel mai no s’ha adaptat a les novetats informàtiques: escriu a mà i desprès a màquina. Els anys li han suavitzat l’òptica i ara Candel contempla amb nostàlgia continguda els suburbis on es va criar.
“Un s’ha d’adaptar a tot. El que m’ha agradat sempre és escriure, encara que últimament m’he tornat mandrós”.
