Biblioteca Josep Benet

Biblioteca Josep Benet

The library, managed by the Centre for the Contemporary History of Catalonia, consists of a collection of 10,000 books, a newspaper library of 50 titles specialising in history and an old collection of donations of thousands of titles. It forms part of the Government of Catalonia’s Collective Catalogue of Specialised Libraries.

The Library of the Centre for the Contemporary History of Catalonia was established in 1984 as a library, newspaper library and documentation centre specialising in the contemporary history of Catalonia. It has been formed based on purchases and, above all, donations from institutions, publishers and individuals, including a donation by the historian Josep Benet and regular contributions from the History Museum of Catalonia.

The most important collections are those concerning political thought (particularly Catalan nationalism and Anarchism) and the most recent periods of the history of Catalonia (photographs of the bombings of the 1936-39 war, publications from exile, Francoist repression and clandestine activity) as well as biographical studies and dossiers. Some of these collections are now being catalogued.
