Quan Boix arribà a Mauthausen, el camp ja mostrava l’aspecte de sinistra fortalesa que els deportats republicans espanyols van haver d’engrandir ells mateixos a costa de la seva vida, tasca a la qual es veié forçat ell mateix fins que fou destinat a l’Erkennungsdienst (Servei d’identificació), a finals del 1941, on ja hi treballava el tortosí Antoni Garcia i on s’incorporà més tard el madrileny José Cereceda.
Els caps del servei disposaven de diversos ajudants al laboratori fotogràfic per tal de dur a terme les tasques d’identificació dels presoners, els esdeveniments i les visites de jerarques, les morts «per intent d’evasió», etc. Ben aviat Boix, en connexió amb els cercles comunistes, copsà les possibilitats de relacions interessades amb les Schutzstaffel, SS (organització de seguretat del Partit Nacionalsocialista Alemany dels Treballadors) per obtenir favors per als espanyols i, sobretot, acumular proves contra els botxins, a base d’amagar negatius, que van ser trets del camp pels joves integrants del comando Poschacher (nom de la pedrera on treballaven al poble de Mauthausen) i custodiats per una veïna del poble, Anna Pointner.
