La notícia de l'execució del president de la Generalitat de Catalunya va colpir la colònia catalana d'exiliats a Mèxic. Es va saber que a causa de les tortures que havia sofert a mans de la policia franquista, es veia obligat a calçar a retaló les sabatilles de platja que duia quan havia estat detingut a Le Baule, a la Bretanya francesa, i que havia estat afussellat descalç per la seva voluntat de morir trepitjant físicament terra catalana. El p intor José Chàvez Morado, artista mexicà compromés en la denúncia del feixisme internacional, el va voler representar descalç per retre'l homenatge.
